Indeed, long enough.
Your Majesty
the moat before them
it moved on its own
a glacier of ice
around the king’s home
they forded with fire
burning their way across
the moat burnt in half
and was driven off
they reach the gate
to the castle of ice
it melted before them
their fiery might
they entered the castle
and told all to run
“You’re free of his grasp.
Summer has come!”
out from his palace
out onto the snow
the king didn’t walk
he angrily strode
they stood there before him
an elf and some men
bent on bringing warmth
to all lives, once again
“Do you feel you can best me?”
said the king to their faces
he scoffed at their forms
such thorough abasement
then he raised his arms
and cast down from the sky
an icy rain
like rocks to the mind
a blizzard took hold
like the king’s own fury
but the elf held steady
intent on ending this story
he nocked an arrow
tipped with fire and ashes
the arrow hissed
and its tail lashed
the elf let loose
what he’d saved from past days
but the king, as before,
batted it away
“You fool, the same trick?
Have you got nothing new?
Surely, after so long,
you’d have thought it through.”
but the elf only smiled
and nocked another
as the men who’d stole around
charged the king like thunder
the king whirled around
and shouted such cold
he froze many men
right down to their souls
but the elf took his chance
for this was their plan
it was all that they had
their single last stand
the arrow was loosed,
and sailed with a roar
the king let out a cry
like ice to hot ore
the king fell to his knee
he stared as the men struck
his crown fell to the ground
and there it stuck
the men and the elf
had burned the king away
then they burried those lost
and headed for summer days
Have a great day, and be thankful for the warm ones.
